Take charge of your health in the new year.
A new year, brings new beginnings, new goals, and new intentions. We often rely on doctors and other health care providers to diagnose and treat medical conditions, but the most important person in your health care is you. Dr. Julie Silver says “Being proactive in your health care empowers you. We can’t completely control our health, but there are things that we can take charge of that will make a positive difference.” By starting with a few small changes, you’ll gain a sense of control.
First- Get moving!
Regular exercise has more power to protect your health than any other medecine. It reduces your resting heart rate to work more efficiently. Regular exercise also lowers blood pressure and improves your cholesterol and the way you process blood which can prevent heart disease, stroke, and some forms of dementia.
Next- Eat your way to good health:
Minimize or get rid of junk foods with saturated fats, and high sodium, and also pre-packaged foods. Replace them with fresh natural foods. The Harvard School of Public Health recommends at 4 1/2 cups of vegtables and fruits a day, including dark leafy greens, and anything that’s a rich yellow, orange, or red color (tomatoes, oranges, strawberries, red peppers, sweet potatoes, carrots and bananas. The Centers for Disease Control recommends keeping protein to 10%- 30% of your daily diet and of that, the healthiest sources of proteins include lean meats, poultry, and fish, and plant based proteins such as nuts and beans.
Be aware of harmful toxins you may have in your home:
With so much attention on eating right, staying active, and looking for more natural ways of living, we often neglect one major health hazard that is lurking about in our homes: Toxic chemicals. These hidden toxins are everywhere. Cleaning solutions, make-up, products that we use on our bodies daily to make us feel clean and beautiful may actually be doing more harm than good. Consider using plant based products for your home without harsh chemicals or make your own natural cleaning solution or personal care products. Small changes can make a big difference in your health.
